Requirements

  • Must be 16 years or older

  • Must possess essential capabilities

  • Must be able to serve a minimum of 2 hours per month for 6 consecutive months

Opportunities

THRIFT STORE

  • Thrift store volunteers assist with cleaning, sorting donations, and assisting guests at the Titusville or Melbourne thrift store, in turn helping to generate revenue that funds life-saving efforts.

HELPING HANDS

  • Helping Hands volunteers perform housekeeping tasks (e.g., laundry, dishes, cleaning) at the Adoption Center that support daily operations and help keep the animals happy and healthy.

KITTY CUDDLERS

  • Kitty Cuddlers help staff provide direct care for cats at the Adoption Center. They brush cats, trim their nails, and provide socialization while also assisting guests.

BARK BUDDY

  • Bark Buddies help staff provide direct care for dogs at the Adoption Center. They clean kennels, take dogs for walks, give baths, provide socialization, and showcase adoptable dogs at events.

Steps to Becoming a Volunteer

1 – Fill out and submit the online application

  2 – Attend volunteer orientation and adoption center tour*

  3 – Schedule first session with Volunteer Program Manager

  4 – Bark Buddies and Kitty Kuddlers can begin their specialized training

*If you only wish to volunteer at one of the thrift stores, you can do an online orientation and skip the adoption center tour.

Essential Capabilities of Volunteers

Volunteers need to possess the following physical, mental and emotional capabilities in order to serve safely and successfully. Please note that some accommodations can be made.

● Walk/stand for extended periods of time

● Walk unaided on various surfaces (uneven, slippery, etc.)

● Bend/squat

● Lift 20 pounds

● Use both hands simultaneously (open kennels and crates, use leashes, etc.)

● React quickly using reflexes

● Hear verbal instructions and animal sounds

● See clearly in order to maneuver safely and read signs

● Work in an environment with strong odors

● Work in an environment with loud noises

● Communicate effectively in the English language

● Read and understand written instructions

● Understand, remember and follow directions

● Work independently with minimal supervision

● Recognize limitations and ask for help when needed

● Solve problems

● Receive and incorporate feedback

● Work with others while behaving in a polite and professional manner

● Work in an emotionally charged environment

● Remain calm when dealing with upset animals or unexpected behavior

● Treat animals compassionately

● Understand and respect the boundaries of the volunteer role

● Understand the policies and positions of the SPCA of Brevard and possess the ability to appropriately and accurately represent those when interacting with the public
